What People Are Saying

The following is a small sampling of quotes from what people have written in "Comments" on our Online Petition. All 50 states are represented on the Online Petition, but not all states had comments. To view them all go to: http://www.petitiononline.com/stamp/.

Comments honoring family members by name have not been used since it would require the person who signed the petition to give permission before we could use it here. If you would like your comment honoring a family member included, please send us an email to and provide your signature number, your name and full address. If there are enough responses we will set up another file for the memorial comments.

State Comments
NH These men crawled deep into the ground so their families could rise high in the world.
MO This should have been a long time ago.
WI Many of my ancestors were coal miners.
MD Part of history of this country.
MS My uncle was a coal miner, he died from black lung. A stamp would honor his memory.
GA More worthy than cartoons!
UT These people have more than earned this honor.
MA "about time"
DE It's long past due for Coal Miners to get their proper respect.
MN My G-Grandfather was a coal miner in Frostburg 1853-1866 before moving to MN.
IN Having had an ancestor who worked in the coal mines and having died of black lung. Being a citizen who lived thru the time when "Coal was the main source of heat", I agree with this petition that it is high time the miners were given some "prime time".
NY I USE TO WORK IN THE COAL MINES OF WEST VA. ALSO MY FATHER AND SOME BROTHERS OF MINE. WHAT A GREAT WAY TO SHOW AMERICA "THE MINERS"
CO In behalf of my father and all the coal miners (hardworking and honorable individuals), it's my pleasure to sign this petition. Thank you for keeping their memory alive.
OH I was a coal miner and like the ideal for the stamp.
CT Hopefully consideration is given to our coal miners. The Postmaster General did it for the Bunny Rabbit.
VA A stamp to honor the coal miners whose hard work in difficult conditions which helped our United States become the great nation that it is, is long overdue. Thank you for beginning the process.
PA Bugs Bunny never risked his life and he has a stamp!
NC Come from a family of coal miners and believe they are overlooked for the sacrifices they made in history and if Elvis was put on a stamp, they should be too.
KY I am very proud to support such an effort to honor our nation's coal miners.
IA My Father, and his Father and relatives were coal miners. This is great.
AL I think this is a great idea. I am a coal miner's granddaughter, daughter and now wife. These men need recognition. They are risking their life every time they go into a mine. It is a very dangerous job. Not to mention they are killing themselves by taking years of their life off by breathing this coal dust.
CA Coal miners and their families must be honored. America's working people need to be valued and respected. Although a minor symbol, this stamp would begin that process.
NJ GREAT TRIBUTE TO THE ONES WHO HAVE WORK SO HARD WITH NO RCOGNITION...SOME HAVE DILIGENTLY GIVEN THEIR LIVES NOT IN WAR BUT JUST AS HARD A JOURNEY...Finally some simple way to say "Thank you for doing what you did for us"
NV I am devoting time and energy for our loving forefathers to ensure they get the recognition they have earned in the history of this great nation. This stamp is long overdue. Please sign and let your comments be heard by those that have long neglected the honor and dignity of these men.
MI We need to recognize those who gave their life in the mines so we could have an easier life today.
TN This is a good idea and is long over due for the men who helped build our country.
OK It is way past time that they were honored.
SC Really too little, too late. But a damn good idea.
KS This is a no brainer! Way past due!
TX Much more deserving than those blackberries and fruits we look at.
ND For my hard-working Ancestors.
MT It's time that we honor these people.
WA Miners have certainly contributed more than Looney Tunes.
NE I heartily agree with this petition. My grandfather was a miner in Wales and Illinois.
VA Being a coal miner, I think we deserve the acknowledgement. We are the ones who have made a difference.
NM Grandson of WV coal miners.
TN As a daughter of a retired coal miner I feel that the men who suffered and worked through out the years in coal mines, should have at least some recognition. After all we have honored the people who worked in steel and other industries to build this country. Why not honor the ones who helped heat, and furnish many products that were very useful for us. My father worked in a coal mines until the day he was injured and could no longer work. There are many men who gave more than my father did. Many men gave their life while working in a coal mine. I feel it is our civic duty to give the coal miners of America a commemorative stamp; it is after all the very least we can do.
UT This is an owed tribute to miners who built this country through the mining industry.
VT Father worked a lifetime in coal mines.
Unknown Let us honor those who worked, and often died, for the economic development of our country. If Mickey Mouse can have a stamp, why not these hard working men?
GA Seems far more fitting than stamps for entertainers, etc.
FL MY FAMILY HAS BEEN IN THE MINING OF COAL FOR YEARS AND I FEEL IF WE COULD HONOR CELEBRETIES WHY NOT HONOR OUR MINERS.
HI I'm signing this for my grandfather, and all of his brothers, who were "breaker boys".
OR This is the "LEAST" we can do for one of the groups of "HEROES" that "MADE" this country!!!!!!!!!
AZ This is for my wife's grandfather who died of black lung and every other father and grandfather. They all worked hard with not much to show for it. We can pay them back by showing them we have not forgotten.
WV My family history is tied directly with the coal mining industry. The coal miner is one of the most important if not the most important parts of the formula that has made this country the greatest nation of the world. I believe it is time to recognize them for what they have contributed to this great nation. I am a third generation coal miner. My daughter was the fourth generation coal miner. She is no longer working for the mining industry.
Unknown Their long days during World War II should be sufficient. My father was committed to doing his very best each day and instilled that work ethnic in each of his children. We are proud of our heritage.
Unknown My grandfather lived with a limp from a coal mining accident and impaired breathing from black lung. Does this country have the guts to honor the underclass, instead of fawning over the rich and famous?
TX Both my grandfathers worked the anthracite mines in NE PA. One from Wales, one from Germany. My German grandfather was killed there in an accident. If you can give Mickey Mouse a stamp, you certainly ought to salute these guys.
Unknown We honor rock and roll singers, why not honor the men who kept us warm and employed in a variety of businesses. And let's not forget that many were repaid with agonizing illness and early death.
ID My father died of black lung which he contracted working 40 years in the mines.
NJ Long overdue - As the niece and granddaughter (on both sides), I remember fondly seeing only their eyes "dancing" as they entered the door into home after a long, hard and dirty day. Many times especially my Uncle would skip a shower, just to get home to see his "little lads and lassies." Their respect for education, commitment to family, and hard work ethic has been passed on to their children. Like them many of their children have asked for very little in return. That family, church, community and work ethic was the backbone of America. All of this was done in a non-judgmental way........ Unlike today they did not compare, or dare to think they worked harder than anyone else. What was important was that they had a family to feed, clothe and educate. Let's thank them before it's too late.
MS No group in industry did more for this country.
